The 2016 harvest was certainly one of the longest in recent years in terms of duration. Early signs of such a long growing season were already evident at the start of the season, when January and the first part of February were characterized by mild temperatures and scarce rainfall, confirming the climatic trend that had already emerged in the first part of the winter. At the end of February and throughout March, temperatures dropped, and rainfall was abundant, providing a good water reserve in the soil, although lower than what was recorded the previous year. The "late" cold caused a delay in the vegetative restart, estimated at around ten days compared to the previous year. Spring began with significant rainfall, which, however, did not cause phytopathological damage as it coincided with a less sensitive vegetative stage and average temperatures that were not high, mostly due to low night-time minimums. This phenological delay lasted until the end of summer, which also started slowly but developed through to the end of September. The delay in development during the first part of the year was made up for in August and September. In particular, the second half of September was crucial for the components that would determine the structure of the wines, especially regarding the accumulation of phenolic substances.
